Prior to joining the Mt. Sinai team, Brian worked as pediatric neurosurgeon at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, where he also served as Chief Medical Officer for UH Ventures, the commercialization/biotech arm of University Hospitals.
As Vice President, Strategy, Dr. Rothstein directs all aspects of the Foundation’s strategic and responsive grantmaking activities, as well as develops initiatives that result in broad scale community health improvement in Mt. Sinai’s areas of focus: Health of the Jewish Community; Health of the Urban Community; Academic Medicine and Bioscience; and Health Policy.
A significant portion of Mt. Sinai’s $180 million corpus is donor-designated for medical education and medical research. In addition to his overall supervisory responsibilities, Dr. Rothstein provides leadership in this critical area of Mt. Sinai’s grantmaking activity.
Dr. Rothstein served as assistant professor of neurosurgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He attended the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration / Marketing and worked in the sports marketing and marketing consulting industry before attending Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and earning his MD degree. He also obtained a Master of Science in Applied Anatomy while attending medical school. Dr. Rothstein completed his neurosurgery residency at University Hospitals and a fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery at the Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. Dr. Rothstein served as an independent neuro consultant for the NFL and as an advisor on player safety in high school contact sports.
Dr. Rothstein is a 2022 alumnus of the Wexner Heritage Program, a national initiative that educates up-and-coming Jewish leaders in the history, thought, texts and contemporary leadership challenges of the Jewish People. He is also on the board of JFC Security, LLC and active with Hawken Mastery School’s program to develop pipelines for underrepresented minorities in the fields of medicine and technology.
Outside of work, Dr. Rothstein enjoys spending time with his wife and three young children.
